What the dates mean for club football.

Why does the Premier League stop for internationals?

FIFA sets windows for national-team qualifiers, tournaments and friendlies. The Premier League pauses during the three in-season windows shown here. Summer internationals sit outside this season’s league schedule.

What changed in September and October 2026?

Two separate autumn windows became one 16-day window, with room for up to four matches per national team. November and March retain nine-day windows. The combined window means one longer pause before Matchweek 6.

Why doesn’t the league restart when the window ends?

The international calendar and the league fixture list have different jobs. The window closes first; league fixtures resume on their scheduled dates. Your club’s first match can fall later than the opening game of that round. Kickoffs can also change.

Will a player who played internationally start for their club?

An international appearance confirms participation in that match. It does not confirm fitness, travel, a return to training or the manager’s next XI. Check current team news and the exact match’s lineup; only the official team sheet confirms the starters.
