Premier League loan rules: can players face their parent club?
In the 2026/27 Premier League, a loan player can face their parent club only if both clubs agree in writing and give the League a copy before the match. Without that agreement, they cannot play in that fixture. The FA Cup and Carabao Cup have separate loan rules.
Can loan players play against their parent club?
Can a loan player face this opponent?
Fictional domestic loan. 2026/27 rules, reviewed .
Check for the required written agreement. Unknown paperwork does not establish either a confirmed absence or permission to play.
Premier League; against the parent club; written match permission: not confirmed.
Passing a loan check does not confirm that a player is eligible, fit, selected or starting.
Permission means both clubs agree in writing and provide a copy to the League before this match.
All loan scenarios in plain text
Each example uses the 2026/27 rules. “Not confirmed” means the evidence is unknown. “Not in place” means the required permission is missing or late. A confirmed block remains a block even if another check is unknown.
In the Premier League, parent-opponent permission needs both clubs' written agreement copied to the League before the match. In the FA Cup, the parent's written permission must reach the FA no later than 75 minutes before kick-off, and any effective cup-wide prohibition must also be absent.
Carabao Cup consent is opt-out under Rule 6.3. Passing that check does not settle a parent-club fixture or overall eligibility. All examples leave registration, other competition conditions, suspensions, fitness and selection to a separate check.
Premier League
Premier League; against the parent club; written match permission: not confirmed.
Permission to face the parent is not confirmed. Check for the required written agreement. Unknown paperwork does not establish either a confirmed absence or permission to play.
Premier League; against the parent club; written match permission: not in place.
Cannot face the parent club in this example. The clubs have not supplied the required written agreement before this match. Fitness or normal training cannot remove this loan restriction.
Premier League; against the parent club; written match permission: received on time.
The parent-opponent permission is in place. Both clubs have agreed in writing and the League has received the agreement before the match. This clears that loan condition only; other eligibility checks and selection remain separate.
Premier League; against another club.
This opponent is not the parent club. The parent-opponent restriction does not apply to this fixture. Registration, suspension, fitness and the manager's selection are still separate questions.
FA Cup
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: not confirmed; written match permission: not confirmed.
Check whether the parent has blocked cup participation. Both the cup-wide prohibition and the required permission for this opponent are unconfirmed. Silence in public reports settles neither check.
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: not confirmed; written match permission: not in place.
Cannot face the parent club in this example. The FA has not received the parent's written permission by 75 minutes before kick-off. That missing permission blocks this fixture, even if the cup-wide prohibition is still unknown.
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: not confirmed; written match permission: received on time.
Check whether the parent has blocked cup participation. The example does not establish whether an effective prohibition exists. No public confirmation is not proof that the parent has allowed cup participation.
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: no effective prohibition; written match permission: not confirmed.
Permission to face the parent is not confirmed. Check for the required written agreement. Unknown paperwork does not establish either a confirmed absence or permission to play.
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: no effective prohibition; written match permission: not in place.
Cannot face the parent club in this example. The FA has not received the parent's written permission by 75 minutes before kick-off. That missing permission blocks this fixture, even if the cup-wide prohibition is still unknown.
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: no effective prohibition; written match permission: received on time.
The parent-opponent permission is in place. There is no effective cup prohibition, and the FA has received the parent's written permission by 75 minutes before kick-off. These loan conditions are met; other eligibility checks and selection remain separate.
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: effective prohibition confirmed; written match permission: not confirmed.
The parent has blocked cup participation. An effective prohibition is confirmed in this example. Permission to face the parent does not, by itself, remove a separate cup-wide prohibition.
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: effective prohibition confirmed; written match permission: not in place.
The parent has blocked cup participation. An effective prohibition is confirmed in this example. Permission to face the parent does not, by itself, remove a separate cup-wide prohibition.
FA Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: effective prohibition confirmed; written match permission: received on time.
The parent has blocked cup participation. An effective prohibition is confirmed in this example. Permission to face the parent does not, by itself, remove a separate cup-wide prohibition.
FA Cup; against another club; cup prohibition: not confirmed.
Check whether the parent has blocked cup participation. The example does not establish whether an effective prohibition exists. No public confirmation is not proof that the parent has allowed cup participation.
FA Cup; against another club; cup prohibition: no effective prohibition.
This opponent is not the parent club. There is no effective cup prohibition in this example, and no parent-opponent permission is needed for this fixture. Other eligibility requirements and selection remain separate.
FA Cup; against another club; cup prohibition: effective prohibition confirmed.
The parent has blocked cup participation. An effective prohibition is confirmed in this example. Permission to face the parent does not, by itself, remove a separate cup-wide prohibition.
Carabao Cup
Carabao Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: not confirmed.
Check whether the parent has blocked cup participation. The example does not establish whether an effective prohibition exists. No public confirmation is not proof that the parent has allowed cup participation.
Carabao Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: no effective prohibition.
No block under the cup-loan consent rule. No express refusal is recorded in this example. Rule 6.3 needs no separate opt-in, but this does not settle the parent-club fixture: check registration, other eligibility requirements and applicable parent-club terms.
Carabao Cup; against the parent club; cup prohibition: effective prohibition confirmed.
The parent has blocked cup participation. An effective prohibition is confirmed in this example. Permission to face the parent does not, by itself, remove a separate cup-wide prohibition.
Carabao Cup; against another club; cup prohibition: not confirmed.
Check whether the parent has blocked cup participation. The example does not establish whether an effective prohibition exists. No public confirmation is not proof that the parent has allowed cup participation.
Carabao Cup; against another club; cup prohibition: no effective prohibition.
No block under the cup-loan consent rule. No express refusal is recorded in this example. That passes the Rule 6.3 consent check only; registration, other eligibility requirements and selection still need checking.
Carabao Cup; against another club; cup prohibition: effective prohibition confirmed.
The parent has blocked cup participation. An effective prohibition is confirmed in this example. Permission to face the parent does not, by itself, remove a separate cup-wide prohibition.
For a Premier League match, the answer is conditional. Rule V.7.2 normally prevents a loan player facing the club that lent them, but the 2026/27 rule provides an exception: both clubs must agree in writing and send a copy to the League before the fixture.
Imagine a player on loan at Club B from Club A. For B against A, a training photograph or a prediction of the starting XI cannot establish whether the required agreement exists. Confirmed agreement clears that loan condition; confirmed absence of the agreement blocks that match; unconfirmed paperwork leaves the answer unresolved.
Changing the opponent changes this check. For B against Club C, the parent-opponent restriction does not apply. The player still needs to meet the other eligibility rules, be available and be selected. An older explanation that says loan players can never face their parent club misses the current Premier League exception.

What does on loan mean in football?
A loan is a temporary move to another club. The parent club lends the player; the borrowing club is the team they join for the loan period. The Premier League calls a domestic move covered by these rules a temporary transfer of the player's registration.
An option to buy is the borrowing club's right to make a later permanent move under agreed terms. An obligation to buy commits it to that move if the agreed conditions are met. Neither phrase, by itself, means the loan has already become permanent. Check the player's current registration, then the rules for the particular match.
Are FA Cup and Carabao Cup loan rules different?
Yes. For domestic loans in the 2026/27 FA Cup, the parent can prohibit participation in writing, but only before the player has appeared in that competition for the borrowing club. The prohibition must meet the FA's receipt deadline to take effect. Facing the parent also requires its written permission to reach the FA no later than 75 minutes before kick-off. No cup-wide prohibition and permission for that opponent are separate checks.
In the 2026/27 Carabao Cup, loan participation no longer needs a separate written opt-in. Rule 6.3 permits it unless the loaning club expressly refuses consent in the loan agreement. That settles only the cup-loan consent question: registration, other eligibility requirements and any applicable parent-opponent terms still need checking. Do not turn the absence of a refusal into blanket permission for a real fixture.
An earlier cup appearance does not automatically end every possibility of playing for a new club. FA Cup Rule 95 permits one additional club in the Competition Proper, with only one club per round. Carabao Cup Rule 6.4 permits up to two clubs in the season, but not two different clubs during the semi-final stage. These separate participation limits are outside the loan tool.
A league absence therefore needs a fresh check before a cup tie. A Premier League senior squad-list omission does not, by itself, establish Carabao Cup ineligibility either: Rule 6.2 makes an exception for that list requirement. Rules in other countries and UEFA competitions are outside this guide.
Ineligible is not the same as injured, suspended or dropped
Ineligible means a player cannot take part under the relevant rules. A fit loan player can be ineligible for one fixture because the required parent-club agreement is missing. That is different from an injury, a suspension for misconduct or the manager choosing someone else.
The absence alone does not identify the reason. If the club says a loan restriction rules the player out, keep that explanation. More training cannot remove the restriction, and its absence at the next fixture cannot promise a start. Compare the specific team-news update with the official starting XI when it is announced.
How many loan players can a Premier League club have?
The ordinary domestic limits are two incoming loans registered at once, four loans counted during a season, and no more than one from the same parent club at a time. All three limits apply. The two-at-once figure is not a total of two deals for the whole season.
Room for one more domestic loan?
1 place remains under the two-at-once limit; 2 more loans can count towards the four-per-season limit. The proposed parent has no active loan here.
1 loan is active now; 2 loans have counted this season. No active loan is from the proposed parent club.
Ordinary incoming loans to a Premier League club covered by the domestic temporary-transfer rules, including the specified Welsh clubs. Loans outside these domestic quotas, completed permanent conversions and approved exceptional goalkeeper loans are outside this model.
Quota space is one check. It does not approve a transfer or provide a senior squad place.
Filled shirts show used places. Empty shirts show places left. Active loans also count in the season total, so the total cannot be lower than the active count.
All count combinations and exceptions
For an ordinary incoming loan, all three checks must pass: fewer than two active loans, fewer than four loans counted this season, and no active loan from the proposed parent. A completed loan normally leaves the season total unchanged even when it frees an active place.
The active range is 0–2 and the season range is 0–4. Active loans are part of the season total, so a season total below the active count is impossible. With zero active loans, a same-parent loan is impossible. These rules cover all 19 possible combinations below.
Loans that become permanent and Board-approved exceptional goalkeeper loans are excluded under V.7.5–V.7.6. Loans from other national associations are outside these quotas, except the specified Welsh clubs in the V.6.2 competitions. Use the handbook for these cases. This tool does not apply overseas-loan limits, same-window conditions, squad registration or other transfer requirements.

Another ordinary loan exceeds a limit. Two active loans already fill the two places available at once. Four loans have already counted towards this season's limit. An active loan already comes from the proposed parent club.
For example, one active loan and two counted so far leave room for one more from a different parent under these limits. If a loan ends, it normally frees an active place but still counts in the season total. With four already counted, an empty active place does not create a fifth ordinary registration.
The scope matters. These quotas cover the domestic temporary transfers defined in the handbook. Loans from other national associations do not count towards them, except loans from the specified Welsh clubs in the competitions listed in V.6.2. Other transfer and squad rules still apply to international loans; this is not a promise of unlimited overseas signings.
V.7.5–V.7.6 exclude loans that become permanent and goalkeeper loans that the Board approves as exceptional. Treat those exclusions separately when calculating the relevant totals. V.7.1 also prevents a Premier League club lending a player to another Premier League club in the same window in which it acquired them. The tool checks the three ordinary incoming quotas, not every condition for approving a deal.
Does a loan player still need squad registration?
A loan place and a senior squad place answer different questions. For Premier League matches, a loan player still needs the appropriate registration and, after the summer window, either a place on the senior squad list or qualification under the U21 provisions. Being on loan does not establish whether the player is homegrown.
A permanent signing is a separate case, but do not assume it removes every opponent restriction. If a loan becomes permanent, V.7.3 allows the two clubs to agree in writing that the player will not face the former club for the rest of that season, with a copy sent to the League. The conversion's effect on loan quotas does not settle that match question.
What should I check before the next lineup?
Start with the exact fixture: competition, opponent and date. Then look for the club's specific eligibility update, including any parent-club permission or cup restriction. Check registration and any suspension separately from fitness. If the paperwork is unconfirmed, keep that uncertainty instead of recording a definite absence or a definite place in the squad.
Use Match XI's team news and lineup pages for the available match context, then the official team sheet for who has actually been named. These teaching tools do not read private loan agreements or approve transfers. They show which question the evidence needs to answer.
