Premier League loan rules: can players face their parent club?
A fit loan player can miss a match for an eligibility reason, not an injury or a manager's decision. In the 2026/27 Premier League, facing the parent club requires a written agreement between the clubs, supplied to the League before the match. It is not an absolute ban with no exception. Cup rules need their own check.
Can loan players play against their parent club?
Can this loan player take part?
Fictional domestic loan, 2026/27 rules. A loan-rule check, not a decision about a real player.
Permission here means both clubs agree in writing and provide a copy to the League before the match.
Do not turn an unknown agreement into either a confirmed absence or a confirmed place in the squad.
Premier League V.7.2Allowed under a loan rule does not mean fit, named in the squad or starting.
The three competition rules
- Premier League
- Parent-club fixtures need the written agreement described above. It is not an absolute ban without exceptions.
- FA Cup
- Domestic loans may take part unless effectively prohibited. Facing the parent additionally needs timely written permission.
- Carabao Cup
- For 2026/27, cup consent is opt-out in the loan agreement. Rules 6.1-6.2 still require registration and eligibility; the result above checks only the loan-consent condition.
For a Premier League match in 2026/27, not unless the required agreement is in place. Rule V.7.2 permits the exception when both clubs agree in writing and provide the League with a copy before that match. A prediction, training photograph or silence in a press conference does not prove this paperwork exists.
This distinction matters when reading older explanations. A specific player's confirmed restriction can be entirely correct without making 'loan players can never face their parent club' an accurate statement of the current rule. The examples below begin with permission unknown, rather than inventing an answer.

What does on loan mean in football?
A loan is a temporary move to another club. The parent club is the club that lends the player; the borrowing club is the team they join for the loan period. The Premier League's term for a qualifying domestic move is a temporary transfer of the player's registration.
An agreement to buy the player later is not the same as a completed permanent transfer. Nor does wearing the borrowing club's shirt establish eligibility for every competition and opponent. For a particular fixture, check the current registration, the relevant competition rules and any applicable permission or restriction.
Are FA Cup and Carabao Cup loan rules different?
Yes. In the 2026/27 FA Cup, domestic loan players can participate unless the parent issues an effective written prohibition. Facing the parent additionally requires its written permission to reach the FA no later than 75 minutes before kick-off. Rules 111-119 set out the deadlines and conditions. Permission to participate generally and permission to face the parent are not interchangeable.
For the 2026/27 Carabao Cup, Rule 6.3 allows loan participation unless the loaning club expressly refuses consent in the loan agreement. The EFL identifies this as a change from the previous written-consent requirement. Rules 6.1-6.2 still require registration and eligibility: passing the cup-loan consent check is not a blanket clearance for a particular player or fixture.
Do not carry a league absence into a cup fixture automatically, or a cup appearance into the next league lineup. Start again with the competition, opponent and current club confirmation. Rules in other countries and UEFA competitions are outside this guide.
Ineligible is not the same as injured, suspended or dropped
Imagine a fit player training normally, but without the required permission for this weekend's parent-club fixture. More training cannot remove that administrative restriction. Their omission alone tells you nothing about a new injury, a disciplinary punishment or the manager losing confidence in them.
Now change only the opponent. The parent-club restriction is no longer the same obstacle, but the player has not magically become a confirmed starter. Registration, any suspension, fitness and the coach's selection still matter. Keep those questions separate when comparing team-news updates with the eventual starting XI.
How many loan players can a Premier League club have?
Room for one more domestic loan?
An ordinary incoming temporary transfer to a Premier League club from the English league system. Countable loans only; overseas loans, permanent conversions and exceptional goalkeeper cases are outside this example.
1 simultaneous place and 2 seasonal registrations remain. This is quota space, not transfer approval.
Premier League V.7.5-V.7.6A loan ending can free an active place without erasing a countable registration from the season total.
Two worked examples and the exceptions
One active loan and two registrations used: one more from a different club fits these limits. Two active loans: a third ordinary incoming loan does not, even if only two of the four seasonal registrations have been used.
A loan that becomes permanent and a Board-approved exceptional goalkeeper loan have exclusions in V.7.5-V.7.6. Do not count them as ordinary loans here. Squad registration, timing and other transfer conditions remain separate checks.
For ordinary incoming temporary transfers covered by these domestic rules, the headline limits are two registered at once, four countable registrations during a season, and no more than one from the same parent club at a time. Two is a simultaneous limit, not the number of loan deals a club can make across the whole season.
These are not universal limits on every international loan. The Premier League explains that loans from foreign associations are outside these quotas, with the stated exception for Welsh clubs in the competitions covered by V.6.2. That does not make overseas loans unlimited: other transfer and squad rules still apply.
The handbook also excludes permanent conversions and Board-approved exceptional goalkeeper loans from the relevant counts. A club cannot ordinarily acquire a player and immediately lend them to another Premier League club in the same window. The calculator deliberately tests the three ordinary quota limits, not every condition needed to approve a transfer.
Does a loan player still need squad registration?
Loan status is not an exemption from squad rules. Check whether the player needs a place on the senior list or qualifies under the U21 provisions. A club having space for another domestic loan does not tell you whether it has the necessary squad-list space, or whether a player is homegrown.
Likewise, a permanent move changes the registration question, not necessarily every remaining restriction. V.7.3 allows the clubs, when a loan becomes permanent, to agree in writing that the player will not face the former club for the rest of that season, with the League copied in. Do not infer match eligibility from a transfer headline alone.
What should I check before the next lineup?
First identify the match and competition. Then check the club's specific eligibility update, not just the injury list. If a report says a loanee is unavailable against their parent, retain that reason; do not translate it into injured or suspended. If permission is unconfirmed, leave it unconfirmed.
Use Match XI's team news and lineup pages for the available match context, then the official team sheet for who has actually been named. The teaching tools here do not read private loan agreements or certify a real player's eligibility. They explain what evidence would answer the question.
