Games in hand explained: points, postponements and matchweeks

A game in hand means a team has played one fewer league match than the team you are comparing it with. It is a chance to earn points, not points already won. Postponements can create that gap, but so can a perfectly normal weekend in which one club plays before another.

Is a game in hand worth three points?

A game is not three points

Illustrative clubs. West FC stay on 57 points from 28 matches; all other results are held fixed.

Both would have played 28. This is a possible points gap, not a predicted league position.

No. A Premier League win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat none. Until the match produces a result, those points have not been earned. Two games in hand offer a maximum of six points, not a guaranteed six-point increase.

For example, imagine North FC have 55 points from 27 matches and West FC have 57 from 28. North are two points behind with a game in hand. A win would take them one point ahead of West's current total; a draw would leave them one behind; a defeat would leave the two-point gap unchanged.

That is arithmetic, not a forecast. The opponent, venue, available players and intervening matches matter. The example below holds West's total fixed so the effect is clear. It does not predict a final league position: equal points may still leave teams separated by goal difference, then goals scored and, where applicable, further competition rules.

Two four-fixture excerpts: blue has four completed checkmarks, while gold has three and one unplayed blank tile. Checkmarks mean played, not won.
In this four-fixture excerpt, gold has one game in hand on blue. Ticks mean completed, not won; the empty tile has earned no points.

What does a game in hand mean in football?

Look at the played column, usually labelled P, PL or MP. If one club has played 27 league matches and another has played 28, the first has one game in hand on the second. If it has played 26, it has two. The comparison is always between clubs in the same competition and season.

It is not an extra match added to the season. In the Premier League, each of the 20 clubs is scheduled to play 38 league matches: every opponent once at home and once away. A club with a game in hand has more of its own league schedule still to complete than the club being compared with.

The phrase is relative. A team can have one game in hand on one rival and none on another. It can also lead the table while having a game in hand. Neither the points gap nor the position alone tells you how many matches have been played.

About these figures

Loaded from Match XI's season records. Points here are calculated from recorded results; disciplinary point adjustments are not included.

Latest completed match kick-off: . The load time is not a new result or confirmation of fixture changes.

This comparison does not update while the page is open. Dates can change. Check the league or club announcement before making travel plans.

Read played and points together. Subtract the smaller played total from the larger one to find the number of games in hand in that comparison. Then read the points gap separately. Do not add hypothetical wins to the published table.

The two-club comparison below uses Match XI's recorded Premier League results. When both clubs have played the same number, it says so. A blank field or a result still awaiting confirmation is not treated as a completed match. The next listed fixtures give calendar context; they are not automatically identified as the matches that caused any earlier gap.

Points per game can describe the pace at which a team has earned points, but it does not award the points from its remaining fixtures. Nor does it tell you which team had the harder opponents. Start with the actual played totals, actual points and the dated fixture list.

Why do Premier League fixtures get moved or postponed?

A fixture can move because of television selections, domestic cup commitments or European matches. A Saturday listing can become a Sunday or Monday match without anything having gone wrong. During that weekend, the clubs playing later may temporarily have a game in hand on clubs that have already played.

A game can also be postponed when it cannot take place as scheduled. Weather and safety concerns are possible causes. The referee assesses whether the pitch is suitable, while safety decisions can also concern supporters and the area around the ground. Do not infer the cause just from a missing score.

The rearranged date may not be announced immediately. Both clubs' other commitments need to be considered, and an announcement can still contain conditions. For a specific fixture, the Premier League or club announcement is the place to check the reason and any remaining caveat.

Postponed, rearranged or abandoned: what changes?

Postponed means the match will not start at the scheduled time. It is not a 0-0 draw, and the teams do not receive a point each simply because the game was called off. Rearranged or rescheduled means a replacement date or time has been set. Check whether it is still conditional.

Abandoned means a match started but was stopped before completion. Do not assume the score at that moment is the final result, or that the next fixture will necessarily restart from that minute. The competition's decision determines what happens next.

A dated example makes the distinction clear. Everton v Liverpool was originally scheduled for 7 December 2024 and postponed because of Storm Darragh safety concerns. On 13 January 2025, the Premier League announced 12 February as the new date, initially subject to Liverpool's Champions League schedule. The original date, the announcement date and the replacement date were three different things.

Why does Matchweek 20 not always mean 20 games played?

A matchweek identifies a group of league fixtures. The played column counts completed league matches for a club. They answer different questions. Most rounds contain ten fixtures, but their games do not have to happen on the same day or even within one calendar week after rearrangements.

An outstanding match from an earlier round can be played between later rounds. Its original round label may still appear on the fixture record. That does not make it a second match against the same opponent at the same venue, and it does not increase the club's season to 39 games.

When the labels seem confusing, read the named teams, competition, season and current kick-off date first. On Match XI, the round link groups the fixture; the date tells you when it is listed to take place. An international break also does not, by itself, give every club a game in hand on every other club.

What are blank and double gameweeks?

These terms are especially common in Fantasy Premier League. A club has a blank gameweek when it has no league fixture in that FPL gameweek, and a double when it has two. A rearranged match can be grouped with another fixture in the same scoring period.

Two Premier League matches within seven days do not automatically mean a double FPL gameweek. They may belong to different FPL deadlines and scoring periods. Likewise, a Champions League or FA Cup match does not count as a second Premier League fixture. Check the actual FPL fixture allocation before treating a calendar week as a double.

This guide explains the calendar language. Match XI's comparison is not an FPL deadline or chip-planning tool, and its stored matchweek label should not be used as proof of a particular Fantasy scoring period.

What happens to team news when a match is rearranged?

A forecast made for the original date is not confirmation of the team for the new one. Players may recover, become unavailable or face different selection decisions in the meantime. Read team news against the exact fixture and the time it was checked, not just the two club names.

Official lineups are tied to matchday. For the timing of their release, use the current kick-off and the separate announcement guide below. If a page still shows the old date or an expired prediction, follow the updated fixture and club information rather than assuming the old XI carries over.

The practical check is short: which two clubs are being compared, how many league games has each completed, what points have they actually earned, and is the next fixture's date confirmed or still subject to change? That is enough to read games in hand without turning possibilities into facts.
